Swedish cities, towns and villages are often followed by one or two letters, which represent Swedish counties. These county designations are useful for finding locations and differentiating between two places with the same name. The county (län) letter used to appear on Swedish vehicle license plates depending upon where the vehicle is registered. This was ended on January 1, 1974. Now another system with three letters and three digits is used.
