Emigrants to America from Sweden

by Lennart Holmquist

Swan John Swanson (December 25, 1855 - November 20, 1920) was born in Hyllela, Ukna Socken, Kalmar Län Sweden. 'Swan John Swanson' was his American name. He went by the name of John. In Sweden his name was Sven Johan Svenson. I will refer to him by his American name.

In America John married Beata Josephine Jonsson (February 3, 1857 - August 4, 1939) on May 28, 1881. In America Beata went by the name of Betty. I will use her Swedish name because I like the sound of it, and I am a little biased in favor of Swedish names than Americanized names.

They both left Sweden on the same ship on April 5, 1880 bound for England where they changed ships.

We know that John arrived in New York on May 1, 1880 and was in Chicago by a few days afterward. I assume that Beata did also though we haven't found her name on any passenger lists yet.

For an account of Swan and Beata see the document Swan John Swanson, which may have been written by John T. Holmquist, and typed up later by his son Bernard Holmquist. I am adding to what both my grandfather and father wrote.
