Erickson Family Tree

Bengt Persson (April 21, 1690 - January 17, 1725) married Ingeborg Olofsdotter (July 10, 1688 - September 9, 1743) probably of Bregården, Karlskog.

Bengt was a shoemaker at Bregården, Karlskoga. One of the children of Bengt and Ingeborg was Peder Bengtsson from whom all of us are descended.

Sven Bengtsson (July 7, 1707 - ?).

Olof Bengtsson (April 15, 1711 - October 15, 1717).

Peder [Pehr] Bengtsson (December 18, 1713 - May 29, 1765) married Lena Johansdotter (1725 - April 11, 1789) of Bregården, Karlskoga on June 29, 1742.

Peder was a farmer at Bregården. He died from lung consumption. Lena remarried in 1766 to Olof Jansson. She became a widow again in 1788.

Jan Persson (August 8, 1743 - ?).

Olof Persson (August 11, 1744 - September 4, 1792) married Brita Larsdotter (March 26, 1745 - June 1, 1820) on June 25, 1769.

Olof was a farmer, part owner of a foundry, and a local policeman.

Katarina Olofsdotter (September 9, 1769 - ?) married Erik Börjesson (1757 - ). Note: the name "Olofsdotter" for all the daughters of Olof Persson is presumed at this point.

Lena Olofsdotter (November 22, 1771 -) married Jonas Persson ( ).

Maria Olofsdotter (March 1775 - April 9, 1775). Probably Olaf's and Brita's child but this is not for certain.

Maria Olofsdotter (June 15, 1776 - September 9, 1776).

Maria Olofsdotter (August 28, 1777 - ?).

Olof Olsson (November 14, 1779 - November 19, 1854) of Bregården, Karlskoga married Stina Eriksdotter (January 23, 1792 - April 3, 1865) of Brickegåden, Karlskoga on March 20, 1812. Stina was the daughter of Erik Andersson and Stina Persdotter. Olof was a farmer and part owner of a foundry. He lived at Brickegården from his marriage until about 1825, then at Bäck, and finally at Utterbäck from 1834 to 1854. Olof died at Utterbäck. His son, Erik Olsson eventually took the farm at Utterbäck.

Sara Olsdotter (October 1819 - November 2, 1819) may have been the daughter of Olof, but this is not certain. She was only a month old when she died.

Olle Olsson (May 1, 1822 - May 1, 1822). Lived one hour.

Erik Olsson (June 28, 1823 - March 19, 1824). Died from breast fever.

Erik Olsson (August 9, 1824 - December 29, 1867) was born at Brickegården, Karlskoga, Varmland, Sweden and died of pneumonia at Utterbäck, Sweden. He married Anna Lisa Andersdotter ( July 6, 1830 - September 17, 1878) on June 23, 1851. Her parents were Anders Ersson ( ) and Sara Jansdotter ( ) of Stoekberga, Karlskoga, Sweden.

Erik was a farmer, and with other farmers in the area a part-owner of a blast furnace. The furnace was called Immetorp. He also seems to have been part owner of a sawmill and a flour mill at Utterbäck.

Erik eventually went bankrupt in 1865 a little less than three years before his death. The farm was auctioned off in April of 1870 and sold to a Nils Ersson. Charlie Larson met Nils' grandson, Augustinus Eriksson, in Sweden in October of 1967.

Erik wrote in his bankruptcy petition on April 15, 1865:

As a distraint has been sued for my property and I fear that if such an execution be carried out the right of the rest of the creditors may be forfeited, I must ask to be permitted to give up my property for bankruptcy. In spite of sparseness in my living and sincere endeavors to provide for myself and my dependents, I feel unable to pay my debts. I am enclosing a list of my creditors.

Twenty-one creditors were listed, debts totaled 4471 riksdaler, and assets were 2872. Erik felt compelled to file for bankruptcy in order to protect the rights of his other creditors, so they would get their fair share of what assets he had.

Eric was in debt for a bank loan and several private loans as well as things he had bought at auction, for food he had bought from a general store in the area, for seed for sowing the the spring of 1864, municipal taxes, and for cloths he bought. He had also been paid in advance for iron he was to deliver to Ölsboda bruk (near Degerfors), but failed to make the delivery.

The main reason probably that Erik was doing so poorly financially was that he had been sick for a long time, and had he had many children which was no doubt a drain on his limited funds.

The farm was sold at auction for 3000 riksdaler.

Their children's names were Anna, Anders, Eric, Carl (Charles), Victor, Jacob, Christina and Hanna.

Anna Lovisa Erickson (April 23, 1852 - ?) either went to or arrived in the United States in 1879 probably at the same time as her brother, and went to the Dakota Territory with her brother. She married there and took over her brother Carl's farm. Carl had returned to Chicago.

Anna may have married an Edwin F. Vincent of Wheatland. The Cass County Courthouse has record of an Anna Erickson being married to Edwin F. Vincent on May 28, 1879 by Rev. C.B. Stevens, acting pastor of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Fargo, Dakota Territory. If this is the same Anna, then Anna would have immigrated to the United States, traveled to the Dakota Territory, met Edwin and married him all in the year 1879 and all before the end of May. That's really movin'. Keep in mind too that Anna probably did not know much English upon coming to America, and she married a non-Swede who wouldn't have known Swedish. More research will be done to see if this is the same Anna or not. If anybody has an idea regarding this, please let us know.

Anders Gustaf Erickson (June 30, 1853 - ?). Either Anders or his brother Eric was lost at sea.

Eric Johan Erickson (November 11, 1855 - ?). Either Eric or his brother Anders was lost at sea.

Carl [Charles] Erickson (January 25, 1858 - September 1938) either left for the U.S. or arrived in the United States September 12, 1879 (or 1873?).

Carl worked as a lumberjack in Minnesota, and sent for his two younger sisters Christina and Johanna . He eventually went to the Dakotas with his older sister, Anna Lovisa, but later returned to Chicago, possibly turning over his farm to his sister and her husband.

Charles was born at Utterbäck, Karlskoga, Sweden.

Charles married Emma Kristina Larsson (February 28, 1873 - February 12, 1962) in Chicago. Emma was born in Degerfors, Sweden. Her parents were Lars Johan Larsson-Hjort (June 27, 1830 - March 13, 1913) who was from Fagerasen in Olme församling, Örebro län, and Maria Lovisa Andersdotter (May 25, 1833 - December 9, 1877) from Nysunds församling, Örebro län. In 1913 the Chapins moved to Tampico, Illinois. Here they started a poultry and egg business.

According to Margaret Vickrey:

My parents Ellen (Larson) and Leslie Chapin moved to Tampico, Illinois, in 1913 and started a poultry house ([they] bought live poultry, eggs and cream at the door as well as running a wagon through the countryside buying those items). In the 1930's the poultry business was phased out and [the new business] became the Creamery making butter and cheese and later pasteurizing milk. The business was sold in 1966.

The business was run by Leslie Chapin and later years by sons Harry and Richard Chapin [who had been assisting their father in the cheese and butter business long before].

I am sorry that I don't remember much about my grandmother except that [I] always enjoyed going to stay . . . why wouldn't a little girl like to be teased and pampered by two doting uncles! I remember my mother telling that Grandma did housework for wealthy people when they lived in Chicago; also when they moved to Sterlling she did laundry and ironing for young men . . . fancy shirts with ruffles were the high style at that time. I believe she used the name Mathilda ("Tillie") rather than Christiana.

I'm sorry I can't seem to remember much more . . .oh, there are little things like using the wood 'coffee' grinder to grind coffee every morning! I will have to close now . . . my hands get to shaking and my fingers hit the wrong keys."
