Charles E. Holmquist, 88, of Morton, died at 6:12 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Timber Creek Rehab and Healthcare Center in Pekin. He was born June 24, 1924, in Chicago to Edward and Alice (Viddinghoff) Holmquist. He married Betty O’Dell on Sept. 6, 1952, in Chicago, and they enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage together. Surviving are his wife, Betty Holmquist of Morton; one daughter, Kerry (Larry) Van Gundy of Morton; one son, Ed (Dawn) Holmquist of DeMotte, Ind.; one daughter-in-law, Kim Holmquist; six grandchildren, Ashlee, Aaron, Ryne, Britain, Chloe and Caitlyn; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Glickauf and Hazel Lois Holland. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from 1942 to 1945 in San Diego, Calif., as an aviation ordinance man. Charles worked as a printer for more than 30 years, retiring from Litton Precision Gear in Chicago in 1989. He attended Eastside Bible Church in Morton. Charles lived a full life of kindness, hard work, love for his family and love for his Savior. He loved woodworking, airplanes, stamps and reading. He was a lifelong learner and loved to laugh. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton Further visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday, April 13, followed by services at 11:30 a.m. at Eastside Bible Church in Morton, with Pastor Dennis Ross and Pastor Steve Weber officiating. Full military rites will be conducted after the service at the church by the United States Navy and Tazewell Military Rites Team. Cremation will be accorded following services. Memorials may be made to The Gideons International, Tazewell Camp, P.O. Box 5011, Morton, IL 61550.
