Emma Carlson arrived in America from Sweden in 1887 and lived for a time in Evanston, Illinois where she joined the Swedish Baptist Church of Evanston, which was established just the year before. Rev. N. E. Nelson as the first minister. The history the Swedish Baptist Church of Evanston goes back to 1885, 'when a few families who were members of the First Swedish Baptist church of Chicago but who lived in north Evanston organized a mission. Authority was given the group to function as a branch of the Chicago church, and the Rev. J, E. Nelson was invited to come lo Evanston to direct the work of the mission. Services were held regularly at Union hall on Davis Street.' Church services were held in Swedish. Anniversary: Hold Jubilee Week at Calvary Baptist (June 4, 1936). Around 1930 the church was renamed Calvary Baptist. See also: Rev.
